God’s Mighty Power
“Who has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, or with the breadth of his hand marked off the heavens? Who has held the dust of the earth in a basket, Or weighed the mountains on the scales and the hills in a balance?” (Isaiah 40:12 NIV)
“One day my mother and I stood at a window watching the fury of a thunderstorm of near-hurricane strength. It seemed drama on a cosmic scale—the clash of cymbals in the sky, the rolling of drums, fireworks of lightning. Rather than being afraid, I felt like shouting and applauding as the ferocious wind shook the great trees backward and forward as though they had been twigs clenched in the jaws of a dog. All the while, my mother’s arm lay protectively around my shoulders. Only in retrospect would I one day see the connection between these childhood experiences and my understanding of the nature of God. Then I would know that it made no sense at all that God would create my parents with a greater capacity for loving than He has Himself.” (Catherine Marshall, in Warm Wisdom, 2002, Marshall-LeSound L.L.C., p. 42)
Heavenly Father, it is so easy to take you for granted. More often than I want to admit, I am prone to do things in my own power and call on your name only when I am in deep trouble. I can’t blame anyone but myself for my short-sided faith. Forgive me for not consulting with you prior to making my everyday decisions. Show grace to me when I ignore the gentle tugs on my sleeve that you make. Lead me to confess when I fail to honor your sovereignty in my life and my world. Thank you for leading me to Isaiah’s affirmation today. No one but You can measure the waters “in the hollow” of your hand. No one but You can set the parameters of the heavens. No one but You can carry around a bucket large enough to hold the dust of the earth. No one but You knows the weight of mountains and hills. Accept my humble praise today, and let me witness your powerful presence as I worship on Sunday. Amen. |
