How Big Is God, Really?

Tom Barnard

“Who has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand,

or  with the breadth of his hand marked off the heavens?

Who has held the dust of the earth in a basket,

or  weighed the mountains on the scales and hills in a balance?”

Isaiah 40:12

The answer to those questions is simple. “No one but God!” Small wonder that Isaiah could conclude, “Surely the nations are like a drop in a bucket; they are regarded as dust on the scales; he weighs the islands as though they were fine dust.” (v. 15)

We listen to the rants and threats of egomaniac despots condemning the free world before the United Nations, and we ask, “Is God listening to what these evil people are saying? Does God care?” He cares, but he is not intimidated by their words. Isaiah continues, “He brings princes to naught and reduces the rulers of this world to nothing.” (v. 23) History has confirmed it. Check it out.

Commenting on Isaiah’s words in his book, Breakthrough Prayer, Jim Cymbala observes:

“Isaiah is not exaggerating. This is the great God we worship and serve! Amazingly, he is the One who invites us to call on him in the day of trouble so he can exert his incredible power on our behalf. Best of all, this arrangement was God’s idea, not ours. He yearns to intervene in our ‘impossible’ dilemmas, problems that are like child’s play for him.”

How big is God? Bigger than anything we can even imagine!

Heavenly Father, I need these words of hope today. I have close friends who are dealing with crushing disappointment within their families. The future is uncertain. Anxiety hangs around to remind them that in themselves things look bleak. Lift their sights today, I pray. Let them know that you are on the scene and that you care. Offer them your peace in place of the winds that are blowing through their lives. You are so great, and yet you want to reach out to us. It’s amazing. I celebrate your presence in my life today. Hallelujah!
