Only One Thing Is Needed
Larry Mancini
"Martha, Martha," the Lord answered, "you are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her." (Luke 10:41-42)
Emma, my granddaughter, was over to spend some time at Poppa's and Grandma Lucy's house. It came time for her nap. Her mom, my daughter, had left some directions for Emma’s changing and growing personality. Five books, some songs along with her pacifier, and she should be ready for dreamland. I finished the five books, and Emma looked at me and said, "I'm going to get down, Poppa. I just need to do one more thing." I told her no. I prevailed. Soon she was out like a light.
I know this little two-and-a-half year-old. She had a plan: one more thing and then another and soon Poppa would forget about her need for a nap. How much we are like that! We so need to hear the words of Jesus to Martha, who was working herself into a frenzy trying to produce a big dinner for Jesus. While Mary was sitting at the Master's feet, her sister was wearing herself out in what she thought was God's service.
The Scripture is quite clear. His yoke is easy. His burden is light. Only one thing is needed. At week's end, take some time to be still and know He is God. Let go of the things that he did not intend for you to carry! If you are saying, "Okay I will as soon as I...," then that is a sign you need to stop and bow before him. He wants to bless you and give you his peace. Let him.
Lord, Martha's example shows me how easy it is for me to take on much more than you intend for me to carry. Forgive me, and help me to find the quiet places and the quiet times to be still and know you are God! May my life be what you desire it to be—free from the weights that keep me from doing your will! In your strong name I pray. Amen.
