Magic, or Majesty? Tom Barnard
“The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven. So he became as much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is superior to theirs.” (Hebrews 1:3-4)
“Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” (Philippians 2:9-11)
Which is it, Magic or Majesty? Magic is “sleight of hand” stuff. Majesty is “a royal personage.” What really happened in that stable in Bethlehem? How was it that a star appeared and drew kings from the east to Bethlehem? What did the shepherds really witness that night—Angels or a magical spell put on them by someone smarter than they? Where did the song of the angels come from—God or a wizard hiding in the bushes?
The world seems content to be entertained by a magician, all the time knowing they are being tricked. Serious-minded sinners are looking for Someone who brings hope and healing and forgiveness. Advent is another opportunity for us to visit the manger, not to smell animals but to sing again the glorious songs of Christmas. It’s Christmas. It’s time to be amazed. It’s time to bow and honor the true Majesty in heaven.
“Majesty, worship His majesty, Unto Jesus, be all glory, honor and praise! Majesty, kingdom authority, Flows from his throne, unto His own, His anthem raise.
So exalt, lift up on high the name of Jesus. Magnify, come glorify Christ Jesus the King. Majesty, worship His Majesty, Jesus who died, now glorified, King of all kings.”
