Friday Evening Devotionals He Knows Me Tom Barnard
“O Lord, you have examined my heart and know everything about me. You know when I sit down or stand up. You know my every thought when far away. You chart the path ahead of me and tell me where to stop and rest. Every moment you know where I am.” (Psalm 139:1-3 NLT)
Tommy Walker is an internationally-known Christian music composer and worship leader. In the mid-1990s his pastor asked him to write a new chorus that would be used to highlight a sermon that he entitled, “He Knows My Name.” At first, Walker was not inspired about the project, but he soon wrote a few lines that he liked, and eventually the song was born. It has been sung in thousands of churches around the world, and hearts have been touched by it. Here are the lyrics:
I have a Maker He formed my heart Before even time began My life was in His hands
He knows my name He knows my every thought He sees each tear that falls And hears me when I call
I have a Father He calls me His own He’ll never leave me No matter where I go
He knows my name He knows my every thought He sees each tear that falls And hears me when I call
Father, when I was a child I became worried when my teachers in Sunday school warned me that You knew everything about me and that I could never hide from You. As I grew older, I came to understand that it was a good thing for You to know me so intimately. The psalmist captured the upside of this truth when he said, “I can never escape from your spirit!” I pray that you will treat me exactly that way—never allowing me to stray far from your presence. Amen. |
