Jerry

Tisch's brother Jerry, diagnosed with colon cancer. Undergoing surgery Monday.
Update
: Jerry's surgery was complicated. He is in CCU (Critical Care Unit) and will remain there for 10-12 days with limited visitation by family members. Even with medication, he is in severe pain. [Continue praying.]
Update on Jerry
03/04/06):
Jerry has been moved from the CCU to the cardiac heart wing. He told me [Tisch, in a telephone conversation] they plan to take him back to surgery on Monday [030606] for more [minor?] surgery.  He said they are looking at doing the heart stent surgery when he is stronger, maybe in a week [another problem Jerry has in addition to what he is going through now]. He has now been in the CCU 9 days with another surgery scheduled in 2 days. Jerry said he is so tired and sleepy and hurts so much.  He said they have started physical therapy, and he has walked a "few steps."  Jerry said he sits up in a chair a couple times a day, for close to an hour each time. I [Tisch] called my sister this evening and spoke with her son, Deuce, who just had emergency appendectomy surgery. Deuce said he was doing fine and minimized how he was feeling.  My sister called me back a little while later and said that Deuce was not doing well. Doctor recommended if pain and symptoms continue, to request a cat scan. [The suffering of this family has been tremendous. With more to come. Please continue your prayers for this family.]
Update On Jerry 03/07/06 [We've been following this family closely. See: "Praise Report Personal Prayer" for Tisch's follow up on her brother Jerry.]
Update on Jerry 03/15/06:
I spoke with Jerry tonight, around 7:00 PM.  I heard a smile in his voice again.  He said the Cat Scan has been postponed for about 2 weeks due to his weakness, as there would be nothing they could do due to his extreme weakness.  They are looking at a release from the hospital on Thursday, this week, March 16. He said he walked today "up and down" the hall on two occasions. I also told him that lot's of Christians are praying for him, and he again said, he was so appreciative that people that he didn't even know cared enough to pray for him, and to let them know how grateful he was for their prayers.  He also said that only through prayer and God's intervention was he getting through his depression and his pain.
Tisch.
Update on Jerry 03/22/06: Jerry is home, coping well, continues to have some pain, but has a great attitude.  He has a wonderful wife, and supportive family, and will follow up with his doctors this week and next week.  (Meaning the surgeon, and the oncologist.)  I continue to ask for prayers.
Update on Jerry 04/05/06:
I just got off the phone with Jerry. He sees the oncologist tomorrow at 3:00 PM. He has a bit of a cold, which hurts when he coughs. However, he has a pillow that he holds against his front side to keep him from hurting too bad when he coughs. He said the doctors have told him that they feel they have gotten all the "cancer," but they will do chemo as a follow-up just to be "safe."
Tisch: Update on Her Brother Jerry. 04/14/06 I called my brother at about 9:30 last night he is always up waiting for his wife to return from work at 11:30 P.M. When I called, there was no answer, which concerned me.  I called my father, who told me Jerry had been taken back to the hospital.  He said Jerry had developed a growth on his right side inside his rib cage.  They didn't know what it was, and won't know until today or so.  They are running some kind of scan, which detects any cancer that may remain.  They were also going to attempt to drain the growth.  Dad said Jerry has lost over 75 lbs. and continues to be in a lot of pain.  This is especially hard for my mother and dad, well really for the whole family. Please continue to pray for us and especially Jerry.

Tisch: Update on Jerry (11/19/06) My brother has had a really rough time. His cancer has come back with a tumor on his colon and one on his liver. He is being treated aggressively to kill the tumors so they can go in and remove them.  He says he has a different attitude toward life and people after his [past cancer treatments and surgery] experiences.  He said he will beat this cancer as he has too much to live for. He has met with his 2 cancer doctors and his surgeon this past week. The plan is to kill the tumors, before they can go in and remove them.  The major concern, is the hernia that has developed from past surgery suturing, and it is growing, now to the size of a grapefruit. There is a danger of it rupturing, therefore, causing a need for emergency surgery. The doctors had given him a port for his chemo, but it has caused 2 staff infections. He now goes into the hospital clinic for aggressive chemo every week for 3-4 hours. He said it is amazing how many people are there at any given time. And many that he knew from before. He is on heavy medication for pain, and only goes to his office 3-4 hours a day to work.

Tisch: Follow up prayer and praise report about her brother Jerry (12/22/06).

Dear Hank,
I have a new report for your prayer and praise ministry.
Jerry called me tonight and acted very casual, like our usual conversations regarding the day's events.  He started out by saying our sister, Sandi had called him, and said Daddy wanted all of us 'kids' to go to church with he and mother on Sunday. I asked him why Sandi didn't call me herself, and he told Sandi that he was calling me tonight, and he would share this. That's how the conversation began. We then continued our conversation for about 15 minutes, and then Jerry explained something to me, which I will share with you, to give you an idea of its importance.

He explained that when he goes for blood work before his chemo, they check what is called "CEA." He explained it is like a measurement for where the tumor growth/decline is; like a 'tumor marker,' as he explained. He said the higher the elevation of CEA is by blood count, the worse the chemo is working and the tumor is growing. And the lower the CEA is by blood count the more the chemo is killing the tumor. He explained that they alter the chemo ingredients monthly to find the right mixture. He said a CEA count of 3.5 to 4 points means the cancer is 'dead.' 0 would be great, but Jerry said the norm is 3 to 4 points and is what the doctor's want to see.

He then preceded to tell me he received a call from the cancer clinic about 5 PM today. He had his blood work done and his 3 to 4 hour chemo therapy earlier today. The nurse gave him a history of his CEA since August of this year.

AUG       CEA was 31.0
SEP       CEA was 39.3
OCT       CEA was 39.0
NOV       CEA was 45.9
DEC       CEA was 20.9!

This means the current mixture of chemo is working and has started killing the tumors. He and I are so excited about this news. I see it as the prayers are working and God is guiding the physicians in their work with Jerry. Jerry, loved this news, and it continues to support his determination to "beat" this thing. Our whole family is so excited about this turn of events.

Hank, please ask our prayer group to continue to keep Jerry in their prayers. I believe it is working and God isn't ready to bring Jerry home just yet—I think He still has plans for him with his extended family and all the good he continues to do.

Thank you, Hank, for your wonderful work. And I wish you a Blessed Christmas.

Tisch

Tisch, Jerry and family. It's reports like this that lets me know the EMFS Prayer Warriors are busy at work and that God is listening. What a wonderful praise report just three days before Christmas day and the celebration of the birth of our Lord, Christ Jesus!

Tisch. Update on her brother Jerry and new prayer request. (01/24/07)

Hi Hank,

Update on Jerry for your prayer list:

I wanted to give you an update on Jerry. He is going in for surgery on Feb 2nd to remove the growing hernia from his last surgery. He says he feels 7 months pregnant (not that he would know how being pregnant feels), but the hernia continues to grow and has become painful.  There is a fear that it may burst and he could not be in a position to get immediate help. When he called me last night, we discussed that he had to be off his chemo for 4 weeks before the surgery. I expressed concern, as his progress has been so great in the last couple of months. When I told you his CEA had dropped from 45.9 to 20.9 in one month, Jerry told me the CEA he just received is now 14.3, which is wonderful news. He will begin the chemo again two weeks after his surgery.  Prayer has played such an important role in Jerry's recovery.  Thank You Hank and the Prayer Warriors in your ministry.

Tisch. Update on Jerry's surgery. (02/04/07)

Jerry and I spoke before his surgery last night and he brought up the evil that is happening in the world today. He came through his surgery with flying colors. I will go to Lawton on Sunday, and we will have lunch together in the hospital cafeteria.

Tisch: Update on Jerry. (02/26/07)

My brother Jerry is recovering well from his hernia surgery and says the doctor will give him an OK to return to chemo in about 3 weeks. He reports he is enjoying the "reprieve" and enjoys the strength he is recovering from being off chemo. He has no CEA blood reports, but suspects they will take them before he begins his Chemo in another 3 weeks. He and I wish the prayer warriors to continued keeping him in their prayers. He feels God is working miracles with him. He continues to say that "God isn't finished with me yet, and I feel he has more work for me to accomplish." Jerry turned 60 on February 3rd, 2007.
